Regarding Rezoning of Industrial Properties Within the Borough of Carlisle
Thursday, August 09, 2012
Tonight, the Carlisle Borough Council took an important step toward the revitalization of several former industrial properties in the Borough. At one time, these properties employed thousands of workers, but today stand idle. In recent years, the idea of a renaissance of those properties has been explored by a handful of local and national concerns. Carlisle Events is proud to be one of the local groups to be a part of the redevelopment of the former Masland/Leer/IAC property on Spring Road.
Carlisle Events has worked cooperatively over the past 3 years with the former owner of the building, International Automotive Components, Inc. (“IAC”), the Borough of Carlisle, Cumberland County and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (“DEP”) to position the property for a mix of commercial and residential redevelopment. Pennsylvania’s Act 2 process has been an important component that allows the safe redevelopment of former industrial properties.
The action tonight by Borough Council comes after nearly a year of work by the Carlisle Borough Planning Commission, the Cumberland County Planning Department and involved stakeholders. The rezoning of the former industrial properties to Urban Mixed Use will allow the redevelopment of the properties in a manner that is consistent with the surrounding neighborhoods and provides services to existing residents and new residential uses.
Harold Brant, CPA, Chief Financial Officer of Carlisle Events stated that “We are pleased with the actions of the Carlisle Borough Council tonight and that this action will allow us to take the next steps in the redevelopment of the former Masland property.” In that process, we hope to preserve some of the history of this industrial property to honor the thousands of people who worked there for so many years.”
G. Bryan Salzmann, Esq. of Salzmann Hughes, P.C., counsel for Carlisle Events commented “We are especially appreciative to the Carlisle Borough Council for their forward thinking that started this rezoning process over a year ago. This rezoning truly has been a collaborative process between the Borough Council, the Borough Staff, the Borough Planning Commission, the Cumberland County Planning Department and landowners such as Carlisle Events. We have also worked together with DEP to facilitate the redevelopment of the property via the Act 2 process. We appreciate immensely the Borough’s support during that process.”
